GUIDE

What is an AI CMO?

An AI CMO, or AI Chief Marketing Officer, is software that plans and runs a business's marketing the way a human marketing chief would: it decides what to say, creates the posts, pictures and videos, publishes them on a schedule and reports what worked. It is most useful for small businesses that cannot afford a full-time marketing chief.

The name is new, so tools that use it do very different things. This guide explains what to expect and how to choose.

What an AI CMO does

  • Learns your business: what you sell, to whom, and how you talk about it.
  • Plans: what to post this week, which offers to push, and when.
  • Creates: social media posts, pictures, short videos, emails and articles.
  • Publishes: on schedule, on the networks you connect.
  • Reports: what people saw and responded to, so the next week is better.

What an AI CMO cannot do (yet)

  • Decide your prices, your offers or what your brand stands for. You still own those calls.
  • Know things that are not written down anywhere, such as a new product you have not announced. You tell it.
  • Guarantee results. No honest tool can promise a number of customers.

How to choose an AI CMO

  • Does it learn from your own website and photos, or produce generic content?
  • Does it post to the networks your customers use? Many local businesses need Facebook and Instagram most.
  • Can you approve posts before they go out?
  • Does it make pictures and videos, or only text?
  • Is the price clear, with no surprise charges?
  • Does it tell you honestly when something fails?
